A Joyful Noise?

Is there anything wrong with jumping and clapping in church?

The Bible tells us that all things should be done “decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:40). You have to ask yourself, “What would Jesus do? What would the angels do?” If you can’t picture Jesus jumping up and down in church, then I would question whether it was God’s Spirit prompting someone to do it.

I can picture Christians rejoicing. I think the Jews rejoiced as Jesus rode down the hill on the donkey, and they shouted “hosanna.” There is a time and place for rejoicing and clapping, but I don’t think it is in the sanctuary during formal worship. If the music is taking control of us, then it may not be the appropriate music.

There is sometimes a very thin line between the music of rejoicing and the music of the world. We have to be very careful. I’ve seen a lot of churches in which that line is crossed, in my opinion.

When in doubt, do the safe thing. If you’re questioning whether or not a certain activity is appropriate for glorifying God, then don’t do it.
